Rodney Oakes currently teaches college, composes, and performs in Los Angeles. He has pioneered the use of the MIDI trombone, using a tenor trombone for controlling various MIDI devices.

He performs with a number of Los Angeles area jazz ensembles, and is frequently heard with OGOGO.
